MINI R53 Turbo Conversion Manifold
Developed specifically for turbo-converting the supercharged MINI R53, the Walton Motorsport R53 Turbo Manifold provides the foundation for replacing the factory supercharger system with a compact, responsive turbocharger package.
Designed around T25/T28-flange turbochargers and an internally gated turbo configuration, the manifold is aimed at R53 builds where increased performance is required without unnecessarily moving to a large-frame turbo system.
Mini R53 Turbo Manifold - From Supercharged to Turbocharged
The R53 left the factory with a supercharged 1.6-litre engine, giving it much of the character for which the first-generation MINI Cooper S became known.
This manifold is for owners taking the car in a different direction.
Rather than upgrading the original supercharger system, it allows the R53 to be converted to a conventional exhaust-driven turbocharger, opening up considerably more freedom in how the engine's boost and power characteristics are developed.
It's therefore not a replacement exhaust manifold for an otherwise standard R53 — it's the starting point for a complete turbo conversion.
Mini R53 Turbo Manifold - Compact T25/T28 Turbo Configuration
The manifold uses a T25/T28 turbo inlet flange, providing compatibility with compact-frame turbochargers well suited to the relatively small-capacity R53 engine.
The existing Walton package has specifically been developed around turbochargers such as the Garrett GTX2867R, providing a useful balance between airflow capability and the response required to make the most of the MINI's lightweight, front-wheel-drive chassis.
Turbo sizing remains important. For a road, fast-road or circuit R53, response and a broad usable powerband can be more valuable than simply chasing the largest possible peak-power figure.
Mini R53 Turbo Manifold - Internal Wastegate Configuration
Unlike many of Walton Motorsport's larger performance manifolds, the R53 manifold is designed around an internally gated turbocharger and does not use a separate external wastegate port.
This keeps the boost-control system compact and reduces the additional plumbing associated with an external wastegate — particularly useful given the packaging constraints of the R53 engine bay.
The turbocharger should therefore be specified with the appropriate internal wastegate arrangement as part of the complete conversion.
Mini R53 Turbo Manifold - Matching R53 Downpipe
Walton Motorsport also offers a matching R53 T2 GTX2867R downpipe, allowing more of the exhaust side of the conversion to be specified together rather than fabricated entirely from scratch.
A GT25/GT28 5-bolt to 76 mm V-band adapter is also available, along with the corresponding 3-inch V-band clamp.
For a GTX2867R-based build in particular, this provides a much clearer path from manifold and turbocharger through to the remainder of the exhaust system.
Building Your Mini R53 Turbo Conversion
Converting an R53 from supercharged to turbocharged is necessarily more involved than simply changing the exhaust manifold.
The turbocharger, downpipe, intake, charge system, oil and coolant plumbing, engine management and supporting fuel system all need to be planned around the finished combination.
The Walton manifold provides the exhaust-side foundation for that conversion, with its compact T25/T28 and internally gated configuration particularly suited to responsive street, track and performance R53 builds.

Material Selection
Every Walton Motorsport manifold starts with carefully selected 304 stainless steel tubing. Not all 304 stainless is manufactured to the same standard, and the quality of the tubing plays a critical role in the durability of the finished product.
Turbo manifolds are subjected to thousands of extreme heat cycles throughout their life. Lower-quality tubing can fatigue over time, and we've seen inferior materials crack or split along the welded seam under these conditions. That's why we specify the exact tube grade and wall characteristics we know will perform reliably in demanding street and motorsport applications.
Our cylinder head flanges are designed in-house and precision cut using modern fibre laser technology, providing exceptional dimensional accuracy and repeatability. Compared to traditional CO₂ laser cutting, fibre laser cutting delivers cleaner edges and tighter tolerances, ensuring an accurate fit and consistent sealing.
Manufacturing Process
Port-Matched Flange Construction
Rather than simply welding the runners to the face of the flange, Walton Motorsport machines each runner to pass through the flange before it is TIG welded from both sides. The ports are then hand-finished to produce a smooth, uninterrupted transition from the cylinder head into the runner.
This manufacturing method delivers several important advantages:
- Increased weld strength and long-term durability.
- Improved gas flow by eliminating abrupt transitions.
- A smoother change from the oval exhaust port to the round runner.
- Reduced turbulence for improved exhaust efficiency.
The result is a manifold that is stronger, flows better, and is built to withstand years of hard use.
Cast Merge Collector
At the heart of every Walton Motorsport manifold is our proprietary cast merge collector, designed entirely in-house.
Our latest collector design delivers the highest wastegate flow we've achieved while maintaining excellent merge efficiency into the turbine. The internal geometry provides smooth gas transitions, minimising turbulence and helping to reduce exhaust gas temperatures without sacrificing performance.
Unlike fabricated collectors assembled from multiple sections, our one-piece cast design eliminates internal joints and welds within the collector itself. This not only optimises gas flow but also significantly improves structural integrity, reducing the likelihood of collector failures that can damage turbochargers or engines.
