Turbo Collector Design Myths (Busted)

Myth 1: “All collectors are the same”

Angles, entry radii, and internal blend quality decide whether pulses merge or collide. Poor transitions = turbulence, higher EMAP, slower spool. The way your gases arrive at your collector, where they're directed, and the internal flow path is more than important; it's everything!

Myth 2: “Bigger collector = more power”

An oversized collector slows gas velocity and hurts the turbine drive. It can also make wastegate control lazy. Sizing must match displacement, turbine A/R, and power goal. If your collector allows the exhaust gas to slow down and cool down, you're simply not going to make the power you could be!

Myth 3: “Wastegate placement doesn’t matter”

It does. Wastegate priority (direct path from the collector with strong signal) is crucial to avoid boost creep and to keep duty cycles reasonable.  A setup designed for maximum power is one thing, but what happens if your traction is limited or you have a new engine you wish to run in at a lower boost setting?

Myth 4: “Equal length solves everything”

  • Equal length helps timing—but bad collector geometry or poor wastegate take-off will still hobble the setup. Runner length is a single, oversimplified aspect of manifold design and assumes every single cylinder is operating the exact same... Testing and modelling is what ensures you have the right design, and here at Walton we've been at it since 2014.

Walton Motorsport approach

Our proprietary cast collectors are CFD-tuned for:

  • Smooth convergence of runners
  • Direct, priority wastegate porting
  • Consistent boost control at high mass flow
  • Gas flow and energy trasnfer

Precision for finishing and winning.

Walton Motorsport's Turbo Manifolds come with a Lifetime Warranty, not something that is offered lightly. Our manifolds have been proven to win championships and not only finnish championships, but outlast the cars they're fitted to! From Material selection and precision-manufactured components to above and beyond processes that ensure every customer can rely on the best manifold in the buisness.
